Cultivating Courage at 511

Blog post descriptWhen I decided to turn my lifelong love of soil into LeafingSoil, I wasn’t starting from a polished plan. I was starting from scratch — at 51. That meant juggling uncertainty, learning new skills like website building, and facing the quiet doubts that come with beginning something new later in life. Gardening has always taught me patience. Seeds don’t sprout overnight, and neither does a business. Some days I felt like I was back at square one, fumbling with hosting platforms or wondering if anyone would show up for a workshop. Other days, the garden reminded me why I was doing this: a child tasting herbs for the first time, a corridor grower discovering that soil can thrive even in a small pot, or a butterfly landing on a freshly planted bed. This journey is not just about plants. It’s about resilience, humility, and the courage to keep experimenting. I’ve learned that starting late is not a disadvantage — it’s a chance to bring decades of lived experience into something new. LeafingSoil is my way of proving that growth is possible at any age, and that the soil always welcomes us back when we’re ready to listen. Through these Conversations, I’ll share the behind‑the‑scenes of building LeafingSoil: the practical steps, the mistakes, the small victories, and the philosophy that keeps me grounded. My hope is that these reflections encourage you to see your own “scratch” — whatever age you’re at — as fertile ground for something meaningful.
