Korean Perilla
One plant, half a year of leaves and counting
S$15.00
Broad, soft leaves with a nutty anise scent - the same leaf you wrap grilled pork in, the one that goes into kkaennip jangajji, layered and steeped in soy and chilli.
Not the same plant as Japanese shiso. Korean perilla has larger, flatter, gentler leaves, built for wrapping rather than garnishing, and it's a different variety altogether - which is why you'll rarely find it in nurseries here.
Yes, it's small. The seedling on 1 August is around 6cm tall, and it will need a few weeks in a bigger pot before you take your first leaves. What you're buying is the head start. Our mother plant is still producing after six months, and every leaf we've eaten since has come off it.
Morning sun, afternoon shade, water before it wilts. Pick outer leaves and pinch the tips to keep it branching. When flower spikes appear, snap them off - that's what keeps a perilla going instead of finishing.
Potted in our own living soil blend.
