Cultivating Courage

How LeafingSoil came about

7/21/2026

When I chose to turn my love of soil into LeafingSoil, I didn’t start with a polished plan. I started from scratch at 51. That meant navigating uncertainty, working on a tight budget, pushing through aching pains, learning new skills like building a website from zero, and facing the quiet doubts that come with beginning something new later in life.

Gardening has always taught me to embrace the unknown. Not every seed will sprout; some plants falter when pests move in uninvited, and some simply never take hold no matter how carefully we tend them. Just as plants face these trials, every business meets its own seasons of challenge. There were days I felt right back at square one - fumbling with hosting tools, thoughts never resting as I worked out what to plant, what to share and how to reach more people, wading through the endless admin work of setting up a business, wondering if I should simply keep my garden as my own quiet sanctuary.

But then the garden would remind me exactly why I stepped forward: the sense of awe and warm realisation that we are born to connect to nature - in the image of my toddler lifted an earthworm with pure wonder, wordlessly declaring, “This little one is my friend!” Or the deep fulfilment I feel when I help people grow confident to nurture their first edibles, curious about uncommon edibles and medicinal plants, learning how we can forage and grow our own food for health and healing. Above all, it showed me the gentle wisdom of simply trying, especially when doubt weighs heavy. That quiet strength made me want to give it a try : to see if this might resonate, and if the Singapore community would welcome it too.

This journey has never been only about plants. It is about resilience, humility, and the courage to keep showing up and trying. I set out to show myself that starting anything, at any age, is simply about how I choose to see it — it is always a gift. It lets me bring all that I have learned, experienced, and care about into everything I do. Whether LeafingSoil takes off or not, I will always be proud that I stepped out of my comfort zone and took that very first step.

In these Conversations, I’ll open up about the reality of building this space: the practical steps, the missteps, the quiet wins, and the philosophy that keeps me rooted. My hope is that these reflections will help you see your own starting point - no matter your age or where you are - as rich, fertile ground for something meaningful to grow.
