Also called buzz buttons or electric daisy. Chew a leaf or one of the little yellow-and-red flower heads and your mouth fizzes, tingles and goes faintly numb - a strange, fizzing sensation that lasts a few minutes and makes everyone try it twice.
The effect comes from spilanthol, and it's why the plant earned its name: the leaves were traditionally pressed against an aching tooth for relief long before dentists.
Bartenders float the flower heads in cocktails. A shredded leaf or two lifts a salad. A little goes a long way.
Full sun to part shade, water regularly, pick flowers as they come to keep more forming.
One honest note: it's a novelty, not a remedy. Fun to chew, but see a dentist about a real toothache - and go easy if you're pregnant or nursing.
